Modern Fantasy speaks to the average struggling officeworker’s plight: You’ve made it to the city, landed a job, have an apartment with some weirdo roommates, (including one stoned Lizard Wizard) and now your Orc Barbarian Manager is slacking off to prepare for… wait, Lizard Wizard? Orc Barbarian? YUP!
Modern Fantasy is one of my favorite short urban fantasy comics I’ve ever read. I picked it up on a whim based on the goofy premise, but it is both heartwarming, wry, and lots of fun visually. The main character’s life is, while fantastical, believable in how relatable the problems she faces are. From awkward interactions with her roommate’s (possibly criminal, definitely skeevy) boyfriend, to her desire to live the life of adventure she dreamed of as a child, but being stuck in a cubicle 8 hours a day instead, and dealing with just an aimless existence, Sage of the Riverlands really spoke to me as a young professional who still doesn’t feel like I’ve “made it” yet. Plus, there’s a cult in the old shopping mall! What could go wrong?
